âA special friend?â He teases. I smile at him as he reminds me of the Logan who was once my best friend.
âA special friend, yes,â I allow. Thomas isnât a secret after all.
âDo I get to meet this special friend?â
âJust because Iâve already met yours?â I snap before I realize what Iâve said. I want to take it back, just by the look on his face alone.
âIâm sorry, Allie.â He looks at me sincerely. Elijah is completely oblivious to our conversation as he plays with the chicken on his fork.
âItâs all right, weâll talk about it later,â I sigh.
He nods in agreement and goes back to paying attention to Elijah. Logan asks him questions and listens to the tall tales he makes up. Itâs a sweet family dinner. Elijah looks happy again. I mostly stay quiet, letting Elijah enjoy his dadâs time while we eat. After dinner, Elijah and Logan play a few rounds of Battleship while I do the dishes and help Elijah a bit. Logan even helps me put Elijah to bed, but I know it is mostly security to stay so he can have time to talk to me.
âSo, I guess I should explain,â Logan says, coming to sit by me on the couch.
âYou donât have to.â
âAllie, look, we didnât plan for anything to happen. Weâve been friends for so long and obviously, thereâs your and my history, and of course, Elijah. We ran into each other a bunch of times around town. We got talking again and realized it was nice. We had both grown up and changed so much, it was different from our friendship years ago. It was better. But I didnât want to cause any issues and she didnât either, so at first, we pretended there was nothing romantic there. We denied it for a while and then one night, I just didnât want to anymore. I kissed her and she kissed me back. We talked about it for a long time and we decided to try. But with this small town and everyone in everyoneâs business, I wanted to keep it quiet until it was real.â
âSheâs my best friend, Logan. Keeping it quiet from the town and keeping it quiet from me are not the same things.â
âShe wanted to tell you. She kept asking and pushing but I wasnât ready. Telling you made it real, and after us attempting to try for Elijah, I didnât know if I could handle it.â
âShe still couldâve told me,â I insist.
âI asked her not to. I thought it was better if you heard it from both of us together, but I pushed it off for as long as I could.â
âWould you have told me if the accident hadnât happened?â
âEventually, yes. We had gotten into a huge fight right before I got hurt. She had wanted to tell you, and I wasnât ready so she gave me an ultimatum.â
âShe had to ultimatum you to get you to commit?â I sneer.
âWe were taking a break when I got hurt last week.
